Grandmasters Monthly Message – February 2012

The other day I was driving with my family when we saw two boys riding in the street on their scooters (they were about 9 or 10). When they saw we were coming, one of the boys went to one side of the street, the other to the opposite side. As we approached slowly to where they were, one of the boys got on his scooter, and pulled right in front of our car. That wasn’t bad enough. He then stared us down, with a very strong look of defiance.

Although this should have been shocking to me, sadly enough, it was not. Times are very different now, I see much behavior like this demonstrated by our youth. Many are arrogant, rude, and show little RESPECT to their parents, adults, and their peers. They are angry children, and they don’t even ...

A while ago I had a conversation with a mom who wasn’t sure whether she should enter her child into the Tournament. We talked through her questions and concerns. After we spoke, she understood the potential benefit, and encouraged her to compete. She participated, and did very well. That whole conversation got me to thinking just what competitions are all about.

Competitions and tournaments build confidence. Our tournaments are designed to balance risk with reward, and our judges are thoroughly trained to make the experience student-centered and positive regardless of outcomes.

Competitions celebrate learning. That is its own reward, and the most valuable thing we can give our children, and ourselves.
Moreover, tournaments allow students to set goals and accomplish them. They spend the weeks leading up to the tournament refining a very specific piece of Kung Fu, and then “leave it all on ...

Shaolin Olympics Pre-Party & “Bring a Buddy” Board Breaking Class

Invite your friends to experience the POWER of Kung Fu!!!
On Friday March 9th from 6:00pm-7:30pm SDSS will be holding a special Shaolin Olympics Pre-Party & Board breaking Class for students who are competing in the Shaolin Olympics Regional and their Buddies. The class is only $29.95 per student and includes 3 boards. Family members and Buddies are FREE!!!. Any student who brings a Buddy will receive 2 extra boards to break.
Board Breaking is a fun way for students to practice mental focus and concentration. In addition, board breaking is a great way to boost a child’s confidence and self esteem. This is an excellent way to prepare for the Shaolin Olympics Regional Competition the next day!
